Overview
Typically 15–20 minutes
Anesthetic provides immediate relief; steroid takes 2–14 days to start working
Typically 3 to 6 months
The Process
Patient Positioning & Preparation
The patient is positioned on their stomach, back, or unaffected side. The skin is cleaned with antiseptic solution and a local numbing agent is applied.
Fluoroscopy-Guided Needle Placement
Using X-ray (fluoroscopy) guidance, the physician precisely guides the needle into the bursa or tendon sheath, sometimes injecting contrast dye to confirm exact placement.
Injection & Relief
A mixture of anesthetic and corticosteroid is injected into the affected area. The anesthetic provides immediate relief (4-6 hours), while the steroid provides long-term pain relief lasting several months.
